The temperature may have dropped, but construction continues to heat up since the Nov. 6 groundbreaking for House 12, which is being built in Kittitas for partner family Chad Morey.

About 60 people--key volunteers, supporters and staff--gathered for the groundbreaking at Nov. 6th to celebrate as the first shovel dug into dirt at Patrick and Spokane streets.

Habitat board member the Rev. Vern McGee, of Grace Episcopal Church, opened the event with a prayer and a blessing. Board president Kathy Matlin was the featured speaker, and Kelly Beard prepared a special gourmet meal. Elbo Backhoe & Hauling was on site to begin excavation.

Chad Morey, who lost his sight about 14 years ago, has been working alongside volunteers and staff at the build site. Chad has been working with Habitat for more than a year. He helped build House 10, he repairs our vehicles and volunteers at the Habitat Store.

Grace Episcopal Church is the first church to enter into a covenant with our affiliate to build a home. The church will have a strong volunteer presence both on and off the build site. Kelly, church member and master chef, is preparing a delicious meal for volunteers each Saturday with the help of parishioners. Three fundraisers are also planned for the this year.

Since the groundbreaking we've been blessed with support from several groups and businesses in our community.

Central Washington University students are making a strong showing. Ryan Romano and Daria Klyuchko, students in construction management, are serving as site supervisors under the direction of construction coordinator Thad Vaughn. Members of the CWU women's basketball team, the CWU lacrosse team and Beta Alpha Psi accounting and finance club, as well as parishioners from the Kittitas Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation and Grace Episcopal Church started framing and raised the first wall.

Phoenix Truss Corp. donated a full day of labor, a crane and valuable expertise Dec. 17th to install the roof trusses.

We are building more than house; we're building home in which health, hope and empowerment will thrive. If you'd like to join us, we welcome you! To volunteer, click this link to the Volunteer page and fill out the necessary forms. Construction happens every Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Questions? More Partner Families, More Habitat Homes Planned for 2012

Habitat is increasing the number of houses built per year from one to three in 2012, thanks in large part to grants from Suncadia Fund for Community Enhancement, Habitat for Humanity International's Capacity build grant, the Kittitas Homelessness and Affordable Housing fund, and our very generous, supportive donors and volunteers.

Choosing three partner families and building three houses simultaneously is the second major milestone KC Habitat has achieved as we've worked toward our goal to build one house per year for every 10,000 residents in the county by 2014.

The first milestone came this year, when we began work on two homes. One is being built in S. Cle Elum with partner family David and Evelyn Heflen and their six-year-old granddaughter. The other, in Kitttias, is being built with partner family Chad Morey. Both are set to be completed by June 30, 2012.

Construction on the next three homes will begin around July 2012 for the parter families the board will select in January.
